August 24, 2020

Dear MacArthur Families,

It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to the 2020-2021 school year. I am very excited to be appointed as interim principal of MacArthur. I have worked in Southfield public schools for 20 years.  I served in the capacity of classroom teacher, title one teacher, and professional development facilitator The past three years I served the MacArthur community as assistant principal.  During that time I had the pleasure of building relationships with parents, staff and students.  I look forward to serving in this new role.

We are going to have a fantastic year! I assure you that the MacArthur staff is committed to making sure this is a successful school year.  We will provide on-going high-quality academic, social-emotional, and wellness support for our students. Developing personal connections with all our students will help us create learning environments that foster creative thinking and a culture of caring.  We are indeed aware that our present time is affecting our students and their family in different ways.  As a staff, we are prepared to be as supportive as possible.

The first day of school is August 31, 2020

As you may know, we will start this year off with remote learning.  Teachers will spend the first week getting you and your student acclimated to (Schoology) our learning management system.  Teachers will also go over virtual classroom procedures. Students will receive rigorous online instruction and support; during the remote learning phase and the same academic excellence that our in-person curriculum and teaching provides.

We acknowledge that remote learning cannot substitute daily in-person instruction.  Remote learning will require adjustments to the scope and sequence of our curriculum.  However, these modifications will not compromise our standards and accountability for academic achievement.  Our students will continuously develop and apply skills as communicators, collaborators, and goal-oriented resilient individuals.

The school district is closely monitoring the number of COVID-19 cases in our area and state and will meet continuously to evaluate what is best for our students. If the state reaches phase 5, students will automatically return to a hybrid model of instruction.  The hybrid model includes a combination of in-person and online education.

School Day 8:15 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.

The school day will include opportunities for Synchronous and Asynchronous learning experiences.

Synchronous learning is a general term used to describe forms of education, instruction, and learning that occur at the same time, but not in the same place.   The term is most commonly applied to various forms of televisual, digital, and online learning where students learn from instructors or peers in real-time, but not in person.

Asynchronous learning refers to digital and online learning experiences.  Instruction and learning occur not only in different locations but also at different times.  Students will have the ability to access information, demonstrate what they’ve learned, and communicate with classmates and instructors on their own time.

One of our primary forms of communication is Remind.  Please download the remind app on your phone and search for @macarthuru.
