We are the Leaders
August 12, 2019
Dear McIntyre Parents/Guardians,
It is a pleasure to welcome you to the new school year! The year ahead will offer many new learning opportunities for your child(ren). Our goal is to provide a caring, stimulating learning environment where children are challenged with rigorous standards. We have the responsibility to foster learning through meaningful instruction within a balanced and interactive elementary curriculum. Ultimately, we want your child to have a strong academic foundation and the ability to apply knowledge to think critically and communicate effectively.
We are looking forward to a productive partnership with you to ensure our children can achieve their highest potential. We recognize that in order to be successful in school, our children need support from both the home and school. We know a strong partnership with you will make a great difference in your child’s education. As partners, we share the responsibility for our children’s success and want you to know that we will do our very best to carry out our responsibilities.
McIntyre Elementary is a Leader in Me School where students are taught and practice the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. The Leader in Me empowers young people to make positive, effective, and responsible choices by introducing and reinforcing the 7 Habits, a set of leadership and life skills from Stephen Covey’s book, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. The Leader in Me provides students with activities that will help them learn practical character and life skills that will lead to those positive choices. The 7 habits have been proven to improve academic engagement, comprehension, and performance by strengthening individual work habits and improving social interactions. The staff at McIntyre has made the commitment to model and implement the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People in order to provide a caring and nurturing learning environment for our students. Teaching students and developing leaders is what we do! If you are new to McIntyre, I believe you will find the habits to be life changing for you and your student. We encourage all families to have continuing conversations at home about the habits and how they can be used in your everyday life.
Instead of seeing children through the lens of a normal distribution curve—some kids are naturally smart and others are not—The Leader in Me paradigm sees that every child is capable, every child is a leader. This paradigm changes everything.
School hours for students in grades kindergarten through fifth grade are 8:00 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. Students cannot be dropped off before 7:55 a.m. unless they are attending latch key; we must ensure the safety of all students. In order for your child to maximize his or her success at McIntyre Elementary School, it is imperative that they attend school daily. Tardiness does not lead to success; therefore, it is not acceptable. At the elementary level, tardiness/attendance is not the responsibility of the student; it is the responsibility of the parent/guardian. If tardiness/attendance is excessive, it is the school’s responsibility to contact the Oakland County Truancy Department. If your child has a special situation regarding attendance, please speak to me directly. If for some reason your child cannot attend school on a particular day, contact the main office at 248-746-7365.
The lunch price this school year is $2.30 per day; the breakfast price is $1.25. Milk can be purchased separately for 50¢. On the first day of school, all students will be receiving an opening package; within the package you will find a Free Reduced application. If you feel that this applies to you and your family, please complete the form and return it to school with your student.
The McIntyre PTO needs you! Are you available to help with the events? Do you have ideas of how to improve the school for your child(ren)?
