Dual Enrollment

The purpose of this program is to supplement and enrich the educational experience by allowing your scholar to pursue coursework which otherwise would not be available during his or her high school career. Students enrolled in the district Dual Enrollment program are expected to complete all high school graduation requirements, as outlined by the Michigan Merit Curriculum (MMC) and the Southfield Public Schools Board of Education. Students admitted to this program are granted full college/university privileges, including use of the library and recreational facilities.

Students are permitted to take academic courses that are eligible for tuition support from the State of Michigan Department of Education. However, courses that are a hobby, craft, recreational, or a course that is in the areas of physical education, theology, divinity, or religious education, are not eligible for tuition support.

Students who are enrolled in at least one course at Southfield High School for the Arts and Technology or University High School Academy.

• Any course that is academically or career-oriented.  

• Any course that is not already available at SHS A&T or UHSA High School.

• However, courses that are a hobby, craft, recreational, or a course that is in the areas of physical education, theology, divinity, or religious education, are not eligible for tuition support.

• You will need to be enrolled in a minimum of one class per semester.  To be dual enrolled you must drop at least one of your SPS classes.

• You are responsible for your own transportation. Students must follow the college calendar (spring break, winter break, etc. do not always align with the SPS school calendar).

• You are expected to attend college classes whenever they are in session. Students must select a college course that meets outside of school hours.

• You will earn high school credit at SPS and your grade will transfer and factor into your high school GPA.

• You will earn college credit with whatever institution you study with. However, it will be up to your final college choice (that you enroll in after you graduate) as to whether or not they will accept the credit as college credit.

• A jump start on earning college credit

• Access to a wide range of rigorous academic courses not offered in high school

***Important Notice for Student-Athletes***
The NCAA requires that all core courses used for collegiate athletic eligibility must indicate a grade and be calculated into the pupil's high school GPA.  This requirement only pertains to Division I or Division II collegiate athletes.  Be sure to discuss this important matter with your high school principal, head coach, athletic director, high school counselor, and the SPS Clearinghouse specialist.
