Southfield Public Schools Social Studies Vision

Every Southfield scholar will graduate as an informed, engaged, and civically responsible citizen — able to think critically about history, government, economics, and geography, and equipped to participate fully in a diverse democratic society.

We believe Social Studies is where students learn not just about the world, but how to act within it. From a child's earliest lessons on community and belonging through high school studies of government, world history, and economics, Southfield is committed to a coherent K-12 Social Studies pathway that builds informed citizens who can think for themselves, engage respectfully across differences, and contribute meaningfully to their communities.

We envision classrooms where:

• Students investigate history and current events through multiple perspectives, primary sources, and honest inquiry — not a single narrative
• Civic knowledge and skills are taught with the same rigor as literacy and math, so every scholar understands how government, law, and civic institutions function and how to participate in them
• Students develop the tools of the historian and social scientist: analyzing evidence, evaluating sources, recognizing bias, and constructing evidence-based arguments
• Local, national, and global connections are made explicit, helping students see themselves as part of Southfield, Michigan, the nation, and the world
• Discussion of complex, sometimes difficult topics is handled with intellectual honesty, empathy, and mutual respect
• Economic reasoning, geographic literacy, and an understanding of diverse cultures prepare students for informed decision-making in their personal and civic lives
