Green Team Plants a Red Oak Tree!

Some very strong and enthusiastic Green Team students planted a lovely Red Oak (Quercus rubra) tree after school. Not only did the students dig the hole, but they also manuevered the 250+ pound tree from the courtyard to its new home.

Coming soon to the garden near you –these native plant species (and more)!

On May 31 and June 1, Southfield-Lathrup’s Green Team planted 70 native plants (encompassing 18 different species) in our new pollinator garden. As the garden matures, we will be providing habitat for many Michigan birds and insects – and visual enjoyment for all who see the garden!

In the 2010-2011 school year, the S-L Green Team set and reached some major goals. They were:

  • Begin a plastics and container recycling program (plastic, glass and metal are all now collected)
  • Increase paper recycling and formalize our pickup process (check!)
  • Become a certified Michigan Green School (we got EMERALD status!)
  • Plant a native pollinator garden (with financial help from the Wildflower Association of Michigan)
  • Host a community Earth Day Celebration (several participants requested an encore!)
We met ALL of our goals this year AND had fun while increasing environmental stewardship and awareness along the way!

At a regular meetings, we may have speakers, do fun activities, plan events and meet other environmentally-minded students. We are also a branch of the Medical and Natural Sciences Academy and Green Team members can participate in Academy activities. Our goals at the beginning of this year included: 1) Begin a plastics recycling program 2) Construct a native plant butterfly garden 3) Host a community Earth Day celebration 4) Become certified as a Michigan Green School. We are well on the way to meeting all of our goals! (3 down, 1 in progress!)
